A new strain of Indian cassava mosaic virus causes a mosaic disease in the biodiesel crop Jatropha curcas
Fri, 12 Mar 2010 06:50:06 +0100 | Archives of Virology
Abstract   Jatropha curcas mosaic disease is a newly emerging disease that challenges the productivity of a prospective biofuel crop, J. curcas. The aetiology of this disease has not been resolved. Here, we report the complete nucleotide sequences of a Jatropha virus isolated from Dharwad, Southern India. Phylogenetic analysis of the virus genome suggests it is a new strain of Indian cassava mosaic virus. Agroinfiltration of the two cloned viral DNA components produced systemic infection and typical mosaic symptoms in J. curcas, thereby fulfilling Koch’s postulates. The availability of infectious clones will provide a valuable tool to screen J. curcas cultivars for disease resistance and facilitate the generation of virus-resistant J. curcas plants by transgenic technology. ...

A retrospective review of uterine scar pregnancies: single centre experience
Thu, 11 Mar 2010 18:12:23 +0100 | Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics
Conclusion  Women at a risk appear to be those with multiple Caesarean sections, termination of pregnancy and myomectomy. Operative as well as medical treatments have been reported for scar pregnancy. Surgical treatment includes excision of trophoblastic tissues by laparotomy or laparoscopy whilst medical treatment includes local and/or systemically administered methotrexate. Although many interventions have been described, optimal treatment is still not known and they remain a challenge. 3D Profile Simulation of Metal Nanostructures Obtained by Closely Packed Nanosphere Lithography
Wed, 10 Mar 2010 15:46:08 +0100 | Plasmonics
Abstract  Closely packed lithography is a versatile technology to fabricate different kinds of periodically arranged nanostructures on substrate or in solution. Due to its large diversities and versatilities, it is necessary to predict the shape of the nanostructures under various fabrication conditions. This paper gives a full simulation for the profile of metal nanostructures fabricated by closely packed nanosphere lithography. The simulation applies to both hexagonal and quadrangular nanosphere arrangements, and the nanospheres can be in one layer or stacked in two layers, with each layer having a different size. For metal evaporated at any angle onto the nanosphere mask, three-dimensional metal nanostructures on each layer of the nanosphere as well as the substrate are ...

Effect of MDM2 SNP309 and p53 codon 72 polymorphisms on lung cancer risk and survival among non-smoking Chinese women in Singapore
Wed, 10 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 | BMC Cancer
Conclusions: The results thus demonstrate that the MDM2 SNP309 TT rather than the GG genotype is associated with increased risk of lung cancer in this population, suggesting that other mechanisms independent of increased MDM2 levels can influence cancer susceptibility. (Source: BMC Cancer)

Soft Drink and Juice Consumption and Risk of Physician-diagnosed Incident Type 2 Diabetes: The Singapore Chinese Health Study
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 03:52:15 +0100 | American Journal of Epidemiology
Soft drinks and other sweetened beverages may contribute to risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, research has not addressed higher risk and Asian populations. The authors examined the association between soft drinks and juice and the risk of type 2 diabetes among Chinese Singaporeans enrolled in a prospective cohort study of 43,580 participants aged 45–74 years and free of diabetes and other chronic diseases at baseline. The incidence of physician-diagnosed type 2 diabetes was assessed by interview and validated; 2,273 participants developed diabetes during follow-up. After adjustment for potential lifestyle and dietary confounders, participants consuming ≥2 soft drinks per week had a relative risk of type 2 diabetes of 1.42 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.25, 1.62) comp...
