STICH (Surgical Treatment for Ischemic Heart Failure) Trial Enrollment
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 05:22:43 +0100 | Journal of the American College of Cardiology
Conclusions: STICH randomized patients are characterized by a continuous spectrum of risk, without discordant dominance from any site or country. Clinical site diversity promises to enhance the generalization of STICH trial results to a broad population of patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Using spatial accessibility to identify polyclinic service gaps and volume of under-served population in Singapore using Geographic Information System
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | The International Journal of Health Planning and Management
This study aims to examine the spatial accessibility to polyclinics and identify service gaps, and suggest optimal sites using Geographic Information System (GIS) to aid in future planning. A national database containing 3.6 million polyclinic visits in 2006 were geo-analysed using ArcView GIS. Patients' travel impedance to the nearest polyclinic was computed using DriveTime to identify areas with the lowest spatial accessibility and highest volume of under-served population. Jurong West and Sembawang were ranked as top areas with poor spatial accessibility to polyclinic services. ArcGIS was used to identify optimal sites with the minimum accumulated distance impedance to this under-served population. If new facilities were set up at these identified sites, volume of visits by Jurong West ...

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards pandemic influenza among cases, close contacts, and healthcare workers in tropical Singapore: a cross-sectional survey
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | BMC Public Health - Latest articles
Background: Effective influenza pandemic management requires understanding of the factors influencing behavioral changes. We aim to determine the differences in knowledge, attitudes and practices in various different cohorts and explore the pertinent factors that influenced behavior in tropical Singapore. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional knowledge, attitudes and practices survey in the Singapore military from mid-August to early-October 2009, among 3054 personnel in four exposure groups - laboratory-confirmed H1N1-2009 cases, close contacts of cases, healthcare workers, and general personnel. Results: 1063 (34.8%) participants responded. The mean age was 21.4 (SE 0.2) years old. Close contacts had the highest knowledge score (71.7%, p=0.004) while cases had the highest practice scor...

The Influence of Father Criminality on Juvenile Recidivism: Testing for Delinquent Behaviors as a Mediator
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 18:33:43 +0100 | International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology
This study investigates the relationships between father criminality, prior delinquency, and recidivism using data from 382 incarcerated juveniles assessed in Singapore’s Juvenile Court in 2005. The juveniles are aged 13 to 16 years, with a mean of 14.55 years (SD = 0.93). Using Baron and Kenny’s framework, this study tests the prediction that the prior delinquent behaviors of the juvenile mediate the relationship between father criminality and recidivism in a four-step process. When the juvenile’s prior delinquent behaviors are included in the model, the previous significant relation between father criminality and recidivism disappears. Implications of findings in terms of applied and practical intervention and prevention work for youths in schools and those in incarcera...
